The first day of our trip, we flew out around 6 am, which equates to SUPER EARLY! It worked out well, though, because it was only 9:30 when we arrived in San Diego. The entire flight was really simple, although I was eyeing the Krispy Kreme donuts and Jamba Juice in the SLC airport!
By the time we had our rental car, we could head to our hotel, so we checked in and asked about a good place to eat. We were within walking distance of Old Town, so we headed out to get some yummy Mexican food. It must have been good because all of these cute birds were hanging around waiting for some scraps!

After we had a MUCH needed nap and shower, we headed back into Old Town to go to the Mormon Battalion Historic site. I thought it was a lot of fun, especially when the photos in the picture frames started talking :) Our sister missionary tour guide was super nice, and we enjoyed panning for gold too.
We found a place that sold really delicious taffy and honeycomb, and so that made the walk around even better. The weather was really perfect!
We still had plenty of daylight left, so we headed to Balboa Park. I had read on Tripadvisor it was a great place to go, but we were blown away by the architecture and the sheer beauty of the park. Not to mention, Todd discovered honeysuckle, which smells incredibly good! I have memories of picking honeysuckle as a kid and sucking the tiny amounts of nectar out. Anyway, the sweet smell just added to that Southern California perfection :)
At the end of the day, we headed to the grocery store, and then headed out to Sunset Cliffs to watch the sunset. Unfortunately, we missed the sunset, but it was beautiful (and a bit intimidating) to look out as far as you could see and just see ocean. Also, the beaches in DE are flat, and so the jagged cliffs were a fun difference.
