Hopefully, my brother doesn't read my blog, because the fact that he needed to talk to me on Friday to ask me why I was going to a place where I could more easily get the swine flu, is hilarious to me. Jacob is 11, and he has always been worried about natural disasters. My family is way into the weather, except for Jake. He would walk out of the room when we watched weather shows. He's just funny like that. He asked my mom why I had to move to Kansas where there are tornadoes. Good question, Jake.
Apparently, his new phobia is the swine flu. So on Friday, I get this weird call from my brother. Weird one, because he doesn't usually call me. Weird, two, because he actually spoke more than two words (my brothers and sister are NOT phone people. Maybe I talk so much to compensate for all of them). He wants to know if I think I'm going to get the swine flu on my trip. I spend the next 10 minutes explaining that only a few people in Kansas have swine flu, Guatemala is far away from Mexico City, most of the bad cases were confined to Mexico City, and that we would spend three days at the most in Mexico.
It probably doesn't help, either, that my dad's line of work involves disaster drills and pandemics. More recently, flu pandemics. Hello!!
I asked my mom if I had helped to make him feel better, and she said I had done great except for one thing: I had mentioned that I wasn't feeling well. Which was true, but I was just trying to show him that sicknesses happen all the time and people turn out just fine for the most part. But I guess he thought I might be getting the swine flu. He reminded me to wash my hands. I let him know that I work at a school and I wash my hands A LOT! Kids are ick.
I further illustrate his paranoid-ness by passing along a story my mom told me about Jake. I guess the other day, my bro Ian wasn't feeling well and went up to his room. My mom went into check on him. As they were talking, in walks Jacob....holding his breath. With a spray can of Lysol in one hand, and hand sanitizer in the other, he quickly deposited them on the floor, and left the room. I guess he was worried he'd catch the swine flu from my brother?
Anyway, I was thinking about all this again this week as I took my daily dose of Dayquil/Benadryl (depending on the time of day). Mother Nature decided to hit me with this energy-sucking, long-lasting cold, and it's starting to really annoy me.
My Cold Timeline (I KNOW you want to know all the details!)
Thursday-Throat a little scratchy. I pray that its simply having to talk a lot at school.
Friday-I wake up, throat scratchier, brain exhausted, nose running. I make it to school. I leave before lunch. I am exhausted. I lay on the LoveSac for two hours, then sleep from 3-6. I go to bed at 11, and sleep til 10.
Saturday-I make it to Spanish Class, and Freddy's for custard with the "baptism kids." I return home, exhausted, nose still running. I sleep from 3-6. I go to bed at 11.
Sunday-I wake up at 8, no longer able to sleep because I can't breathe. By 9, I'm tired again. I haven't planned my Primary lesson. I debate about going to church. I decide to decide later. I sleep from 9-11. I debate again. I decide that I've waited too long to debate, and I do my lesson. Lucky its an easy one. We get to church in time for Primary and Sunday School. My class is good. I feel great! I'm thinking, YES, I feel better! Time for bed rolls around 11. I'm awake at 12. I'm awake at 1, cursing my body, cursing sleeping in til 11. I turn on the A/C for white noise, and so I can breathe.
Monday-I wake up groggy, obviously. I feel tired. My nose is stuffy. Then I sneeze. Now it runs all day. My throat is scratchy. I come home exhausted. I go to bed at 11. I use Benadryl to sleep. Todd tells me he thinks its funny I self-medicate. Apparently, he is too cool for Benadryl. I run the A/C so I can breathe.
Tuesday-I wake up groggy. I take a Benadryl at 9 at school. Mistake. By 10, I am sitting at my desk, holding a book, pretending to read it while I close my eyes. It's bad. I start to feel better after I eat, just in time to become apparently allergic to the chinchilla in the classroom I work in. My nose runs. I blow it. It runs again. I blow it. Kids needs help. I tell them to wait while I blow my nose. Kids need help. I tell them to wait so I can throw some hand sanitizer on. My nose runs. Its bad. I'm miserable. My nose hurts. Now I wonder if I have allergies. I go to bed at 10:30. I use Vicks to breathe. I use the A/C to breathe. I wake up sweating. I have a dream about Zac EFron (now I KNOW I must be sick. And no, that was AFTER the sweating).
Wednesday-I feel better, except for all the phlegm I feel in the back of the throat. Gross? I KNOW! My friend asks me how I'm feeling. I say weird. She says, "YOU'RE PREGNANT!" I say, "ohhhhh, no. no no no. definitely not." At least I'd get something out of being pregnant. I don't feel allergic to the chinchilla today. Todd tells me I grind my teeth in my sleep. And he makes fun of my breathing. I remind him that I'm finding breathing at night quite difficult now. He goes to study. By 9, I'm tired.
But I blog.
Thursday-I have a dentist appointment. Hopefully I won't sneeze on him. Or have cavities. I also have to get shots. WHY THE TORTURE???
Someday, maybe after labor, I'll look back at this post, and laugh at how miserable I THOUGHT I was.
p.s. Don't get this cold. It's a doozy.
