Student: My mom can't come to conferences.
Teacher: Why not?
Student: Well, she's not sure when she's going to jail, so it could be Thursday.
(Yes, and this student was totally serious. These are the kinds of excuses we hear all the time! "I couldn't do my homework because we went to visit my dad in jail in Michigan." "I didn't do my homework because the police came to my house" ETC ETC!)

I bet it's during times like those when you feel the most helpless. Thank you for being a happy face for those delicate children to come to during the day.
