Mercado Municipal

Our next stop on our tour of downtown was the Mercado Municipal, where we spent a lot of time eating, smelling, and wandering! The market is just what its called--a food market selling all kinds of things from nuts, to fruit and vegetables, to meats and spices. It also has restaurants housed inside where you can eat what are called "pasteis"--fried concoctions that are either sweet or savory.

Here's Todd in front of the market.

Walking through one of the "streets." There are several rows in this indoor market.

This is where we bought "world-famous" pasteis from a place called the Hocca Bar. You can see them frying up the pasteis in the deep fryer in the back. We bought a shrimp and a cod pasteis, both of them recommended by our travel books :)
They were delicious! We liked the shrimp one the best. We also tried maracuja juice, which is passionfruit juice. It didn't pass my taste test :)
This is one of the various stained glass windows in the building. It's better in person, our pictures don't really do them justice!
It seems that Brazilians also love coconut! I'm eating a cocada, which is just a sweet coconut treat. I've tried several here, and love them all! Todd got himself some papaya sorbet, which was also REALLY GOOD!

One of the best things about this market was the variety. I got a kick out of the animal parts for sale--it was slightly disgusting, yet fascinating all at the same time. Below are some cow legs.
And here, you could buy yourself some fabulous hog legs or pig ears! Very delicious! Hehe, just kidding...don't know if I could ever eat this!

And here is a whole pig for your dining pleasure!
